I am a long time owner of a 1950 Austin Princess A135 DS2, which has been off the road for a few years now. It is currently at the workshops being put back on the road and should be up and running again by September.
These are fantastic cars that pay for themselves. We ran a wedding business with ours charging minimum £250 per wedding seven years ago and plan to restart the business shortly.
These are beautiful, real headturners. They ae easy to drive and service, although repairs can be difficult do to the huge size of everything and the sheer weight of the engine. Mechanical parts are fairly easy, bodywork almost non-existent.
These cars have a seperate chassis and can be driven with no bodywork at all. Austin used to drive them to the Kingsbury works like that. The front end and rear inner wings are pressed steel, but the rest of the bodywork is handmade aluminium over an ash frame.
Despite not having power steering, servos etc she is surprisingly easy to drive and doesn\´t feel heavy when in motion. Unassisted drums also work very well given proper maintenance. Top gear acceleration (from 25mph) is startling, she pulls like a train, and she will cruise at 70 mph. First gear is so low it is pointless except for slow processional work. I would like to increase the rear axle ratio to bring first into a more sensible use and decrease revs at higher speeds, but have not yet sorted bits for it.
We have the single carb, twin exhaust version (0nly 20 DS2s made with this) giving 25mpg, which even today is quite impressive for a 4 litre lump pulling two tons of car.
Hope there ae others out there owning other princesses. If so, let me know.
Cheers!
